Should
I go to graduate school?
Your
undergraduate degree in Psychology is most likely the first step
towards a career in Psychology, or a related field. If so, some
form of graduate training will be the next step. While it is probably
a poor strategy to be obsessed with preparing for graduate school, it
is never too early to begin thinking about the process.
For
example, you want to make sure that you maintain a strong grade point average
from the outset of your university career. You do not want to put yourself
at a disadvantage when applying to graduate schools because of a poor freshman
year. Use your career aspirations, and graduate training as a step along
the way, to serve as a focal point to keep you on track. And if there is
uncertainty about your goals - this is often the case - spend time with your
advisor exploring your options, questions and doubts.
Materials
explaining the graduate school application process and listing APA approved
graduate programs are available in the Psychology Department. You might want
to scan these materials during your freshman year to give you a general sense
of what the goal of graduate school involves. Later on, most likely early
during your junior year, you can peruse these materials with more immediate
needs in mind.
Finally,
La Salle offers a masters degree in Clinical/Counseling Psychology and a
Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree. You can find out more about these programs
from the Department Chairperson or you advisor.
