Course Description:  From cradle to grave, our lives are intertwined with organizations.  For many of us, organizations form a powerful part of who we are.  Many students plan to spend a great deal of their lives working in and with organizations.

The purpose of this class is to examine how communication influences organizations and how organizations influence communication.  While you will have the opportunity to practice some job-related communication skills, this course is designed primarily as an introduction to academic discipline of organizational communication.

While not a prerequisite of the course, I expect that most students will have taken public speaking, interpersonal communication, and/or communication theory prior to this course.  Classes related to this subject include Communication and Group Process (COM 318) and Communication and Culture (COM 320), and Principles of Public Relations (COM 307).

Course Objectives:  By the end of the semester, students should be able to:

  1. Understand and apply a variety of theoretical approaches to the study and practice of organizational communication;
  2. Understand the role communication plays in the structure and function of organizations;
  3. Identify and analyze various current issues facing organizations and those who work in them;
  4. Understand various approaches to addressing those issues;
  5. Develop some core communication skills, such as writing and speaking.
