Mass Media Writing
Through this track, students learn to write for the media of film, television, newspapers, as well as the fields of advertising and public relations.

COM 206 -- FUNDAMENTALS OF JOURNALISM:
3 Credits
Topics covered in this course include: reporting and interviewing techniques, newswriting, copy editing, headline writing, the editorial, the feature story, newspaper makeup and design, libel, and the responsibility of the press. Two hours of lecture and one hour of field assignment weekly.

COM 402 -- MASS MEDIA WRITING SEMINAR:
3 Credits
Affords students the opportunity to assimilate, master, and apply the basic principles of writing to various disciplines and media. Rotating topics will include: magazine writing, investigative reporting, environmental writing, business journalism, sportswriting, and other ad hoc choices.

COM 302 -- BROADCAST NEWSWRITING:
3 Credits
Students will be introduced to and learn applications of newswriting for radio and television, including hard news features and documentary formats.

COM 303 -- SCRIPTWRITING:
3 Credits
Introduction to and application of scriptwriting techniques in formats appropriate to the media of radio, television, and film.

COM 319 -- ISSUES & ARGUMENTS:
3 Credits
Students are introduced to the principles and practices of argumentation through the study of a variety of artifacts (e.g.: speeches, editorials, books) produced around contemporary controversial issues such as race/multiculturalism, capital punishment, gender, and freedom of speech. Topics will include: the nature of propositions, the use of pivotal terms, research, strategies of organizations, evidence, lines of reasoning, source credibility, etc. The course will enable students to be both better producers of arguments and more critical consumers of arguments. The course emphasizes both written and oral argument skills.

COM 337 -- ADVERTISING COPYWRITING:
3 Credits
Course provides experience with writing for advertising. Students will explore the theoretical and research bases for communication and will examine the role of both strategy and creativity in the development and implementation of communication campaigns. Students will write copy for print, broadcast, and other media.

COM 357 -- PUBLIC RELATIONS WRITING:
3 Credits
This course explores the writing of advertising and public relations campaigns. The communication process, campaign strategy, communication research, and creativity are explored. Students prepare a total communication campaign, requiring both oral and written presentations.
