Sixteen
students traveled to Athens and Rhodes as part of a travel study
course called "Communication and Culture," taught by
Dr. Marianne Dainton.
After
spending the first half of the semester learning how communication
practices both shape and reflect cultures, the students embarked
for Greece with the goal of experiencing firsthand Greek culture
and communication, as well as the tensions that exist between
Greeks and Americans in communication.
In
addition to touring historical sights, the students also met with
faculty and students at the University of Athens, had a scavenger
hunt on the island of Rhodes, and were assigned to meet and talk
with as many Greek people as they could.
By
happenstance, the Greek Presidential elections were held at the
end of the trip, so students also had a firsthand look at the
political issues facing the country.
After
returning to the US, the remainder of the semester was spent processing
the students' experiences and talking about globalization and
cultural imperialism.
