La Salle 56 Wins Broadcasting Award

Focus on Philly, hosted by Matt DeLucia ('07), has won the 2007 PA Association of Broadcasters Award for Outstanding Public Affairs Program/Series. Focus on Philly takes a look at the social and economic issues facing Philadelphians. The show airs Mondays at 5:30pm and Tuesdays at 11pm on La Salle 56.


Communication Department Holds International Communication Symposium

Several International Public Relations Professionals shared valuable incites to students at a symposium on Wednesday March 28 in the Dunleavy Room. Approximately 80 members of the La Salle community attended including both Graduate and Undergraduate students along with some faculty and staff members. Speakers included Phaedon Kidoniatis, Ph.D., Finbarr O'Sullivan, Robert O'Brien and Michael Smith, Ph.D. These experts shared their experiences and used many real life examples to teach attendees about the public relations industry internationally, common inter cultural conflicts, tips on international business travel and more. Kidoniatis coordinates post graduate programs at the University of New York , Athens , La Salle University 's partner in our international MA program in Professional Communication and Public Relations. In addition to his business and communication experience across Europe , Kidoniatis c onducts research and publishes on the topic of international education and emerging markets and teaches continuing education courses in various EU countries. O'Sullivan began his career in public relations in the mid-90's in Ireland , at a time when the Irish economy was becoming the fastest growing in Europe . In his current role as Director of Public Relations at Voice PR, a division of Brownstein Group, O'Sullivan continues to bring his international experience to bear on behalf of a range of clients – from medical device manufacturers to household cleaning product makers. O'Brien retired after 34 years in public relations leadership positions with a variety of telecommunication organizations, including AT&T Bell Labs and Verizon, as well as a stint at one of the world's largest agencies, Ogilvy PR Worldwide. His international experience included senior management positions at Nortel, where he was Vice President, Communication, for the Asia Pacific Region; Alcatel SA, a French-owned telecommunications and heavy equipment manufacturer, and Global One, a global alliance of France Telecom, Deutche Tekeom , Germany , and Sprint. Smith is Director of La Salle University's graduate program in Professional Communication, and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in public relations, communication management, and conflict. From 2001-2004, he was the founding Director of La Salle's master's degree program in Prague, Czech Republic, and has taught both in Prague and in Athens, Greece.

Communication Honor Society Welcomes New Members

The XI Eta chapter of the Communication Honorary, Lambda Pi Eta, held its 2007 Induction ceremony on January 26th in the Music Room of the Student Union. Twenty-nine La Salle Communication majors were honored by faculty, parents and friends for having grade point averages of over 3.25. The guest speaker for the event was Mr. James Plunkett, Associate Director of Admissions and a B.A. and M.A. graduate of the department. Officiating at the event were Alicia Pennacchia, President, Matt DeLucia, Vice-President, Lisa Angelucci, Treasurer and Dr. Richard Goedkoop, Faculty Advisor.

 

New Professor at La Salle - by Heather Baldwin

Professor Huntly Collins has a Master's degree in education, but her passion is for journalism. Collins has worked as a journalist for about 30 years. Her career has led her to places such as Africa, China and Nigeria, where she helped to train other reporters. Collins has done amazing work with the AIDS epidemic in the past, and has been recognized for her journalistic with a Nieman award. Although Collins did some teaching in the past, the profession overall is fairly new to her. Collins was attracted to La Salle because of its great philosophy and its great ethnicity. In her free time, you can find Collins swimming, biking and playing the guitar.

Her office is in the Communication Center in Room 203. She encourages students to top by to meet her and to talk about journalism.

 

Brother Gerry's Travel Study - by Jennifer Kroh

From May 2 until May 10, 2007, Brother Gerry Molyneaux will travel to Prague in the Czech Republic with students from his Global Film course. The students at New York University - Prague will join the La Salle students in a film class followed by a social. Brother Gerry, along with the La Salle students will tour the beautiful landscapes that Prague has to offer. They will sightsee in places like St. Vitus Cathedral, Prague Castle and St. Wenceslas Square. The film students will end their trip with a river cruise in Prague. Opportunities like this do not come around often, and the memories will last a lifetime.

 


Christian Brothers Student Choir Performs for La Salle 56


On Saturday, October 14, 2006, the La Salle 56 staff videotaped a choir made up of students from various Christian Brother schools. These students traveled from as far away as Pittsburgh and Baltimore to take part in the choir. The performances will be shown in Christian Brother middle and high schools during the homeroom periods.

 


Communication Alums Share Valuable Advice and Experience

On Tuesday, October 10, 2006, The Communication Department held their third annual Communication Career Night. Over 200 students gathered in the Dan RoddenTheater to listen to various alums talk about getting a job after college. In particular 18 eager alums from various graduating classes, ranging from 1988 to 2005, and various career paths came together to spread several key messages: intern, network, get involved on and off campus and work hard. Students broke off into groups based on their tracks and listened to a panel discussion of Communication alums who described their current jobs and what it took to get where they are today. They also gave advice on topics like internships, interviewing and resumes. Communication Career Night successfully brought professional alumni and current students together to discuss the exciting pathways that a communication degree can bring.
