English Department

Name of Project: Grants were made to faculty members for professional growth.

Name of Project: The Department retreat was held at Sugarloaf in Chestnut Hill on Friday, August 23

Description:
The retreat's morning session (9-noon) was attended by all full-time and part-time faculty members. This morning session was devoted to a discussion of a preliminary report on Academic Honesty and Plagiarism that had been developed by an ad-hoc committee over the Summer. Steve Smith chaired that committee whose membership was Claire Busse, Dolores Lehr, Judith Musser, and Mary Robertson. Supplementing our discussions were presentations by three colleagues from the library, Eithne Bearden, Bernetta Doane and Chris Kibler. The discussions and the presentations provided a wealth of information. The department is still discussing as a whole a plagiarism policy and handout. Once the policy is approved, we will forward it to the dean, provost, and legal counsel for comment.

Goals:
A discussion of agenda items for the department during the year
An announcement of a department lecture series
A recommendation to the interim dean about department governance for Spring 2003 when the chair is on research leave (the recommendation has subsequently been approved by the interim dean)
The establishment of criteria for election to and of duties for the members of the student board
A detailing of faculty committees and their assignments, and
A number of incidental matters related to department governance and procedures
An Ad-hoc Committee on Speakers and Programming is in the process of narrowing down potential speakers for the Spring 2003 lecture, having solicited suggestions from the department as a whole.
Complementing this event, we have initiated a monthly speaker series featuring members of the department. The series itself is open to all members of the university community. The first speaker was Dr. Robert Fallon in October; the second was Dr. Patricia Fallon in November. Speakers for February, March, and April 2003 will be announced later this semester.
The purpose of these lectures is three-fold:
Spotlight the department

Celebrate the accomplishments of our colleagues, and

Provide opportunities for students, faculty, and alumni/nae to come together for an intellectual exchange.
