Development Symposium: The role of the German Kaiser in the outbreak
of World War I
Description:
On
Saturday, November 2, 2002, approximately 50 undergraduates, faculty
members, and visitors attended the symposium. After the symposium
was over, the students, faculty and speakers met over lunch to further
discuss the issues. The topic was considered timely because the
current level of world tension over a potential war with Iraq has
raised many questions about the similarities between the German
Kaiser before World War I and the current dictator of Iraq.
| Goals: |
|
|
|
Stimulate
discussion concerning these important historical parallels |
|
|
Provide
a venue for the discussion of important historical issues in
conjunction with the Historical Society |
|
|
Increase
the profile of the La Salle University History Department as
a site for scholarly work and discussion |
| |
|
| Lessons
Learned: |
|
|
The
project was considered quite successful in terms of meeting
all the goals listed above |
|
|
A
number of La Salle faculty felt that the level of detail in
the discourse provided them with an opportunity to improve their
own teaching techniques and skill levels |
|
|
The
Society of European Historians and Sienna College have both
approached members of the history department to develop collaborations
on future symposia. |
