Philosophy & Psychology Departments

Name and Description of Project: The grant is being used jointly by the Philosophy and Psychology Departments to support a semester-long interdisciplinary program with two components: (a) a pair of team-taught seminars - "Memory and Identity" and "Memory and Self" - for philosophy and psychology majors; (b) a series of presentations titled, "The Construction of Memory in the Self and in Society." Most presenters will both (i) make a public presentation open to the campus community and (ii) will sit in on the team-taught seminar for a more intimate conversation with participating faculty and students. A list of the presentations is appended to this report.

Goals:
To support the cultivation by the philosophy and psychology departments of a lively intellectual community that can refresh their faculty and stimulate their majors.
To help build interdisciplinary partnerships between members of the psychology and philosophy departments.
To help participating undergraduates immerse themselves in a semester-long interdisciplinary study focused on the concept of memory.
To give our majors the chance to participate in a semester-long course of study side by side with their teachers and with professional colleagues from beyond our campus.

Outcomes:
Through a partnership of two departments, we have contributed to the intellectual life of the campus community:
By helping to build interdisciplinary relations between members of the philosophy and psychology departments
By helping undergraduates immerse themselves in a semester-long interdisciplinary study focused on the concept of memory
By giving our majors the experience of participating in research side by side with their teachers and in consultation with colleagues from beyond our campus

Lessons Learned:
Due to an unexpected change in the chair of the Psychology Department, there was some loss of continuity in the development of the program. Stability of personnel across a long-term project is a consideration the Dean may want to take into account in the future. In the present case, however, the change was unforeseeable and unavoidable.
