Name
or Project: Sociology Presentation: Hate and Tolerance in the United
States
Description:
The project consisted of bringing a speaker from the
Southern Poverty Law Center on campus to address the issues of hate
and tolerance in the United States in general, and on college campuses,
in particular. Mr. Kevin Datcher, a writer and editor of the SPLC
Tolerance Project, met with a campus wide audience for a presentation
from 12:30 to 2:00 PM and then, in a workshop format, with all departmental
faculty and majors from 2:15 to 4:15 PM.
Goals:
To
introduce the La Salle Community to the efforts of an effective
organization to combat hate and intolerance in the U.S. and, more
specifically, on college campuses.
Outcomes:
We
had a good turnout for both sessions, which were held in the Union
Music Room, but the workshop session, which was highly interactive,
had by far the best impact and led to many subsequent discussions
in classes.
Lessons
Learned:
The
arrangements for the speaker were quite time-consuming and difficult
and future projects should consider starting the planning earlier.
