INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS BRINGING COMPUTERS TO CAMPUS
To make the transition for your computer as smooth as possible,
please do the following BEFORE arriving on campus.

CHECK YOUR HARDWARE:

1.)     Network Card – Your computer MUST have a network card installed to connect to the network from the residence halls. If your computer has a network card, the port would look similar to the image to the right. For desktops, a network card may be purchased from the campus bookstore. To connect to any one of our wireless locations around campus you need an 802.11b/g wireless card. Most laptops purchased in the last three years have wireless built in. Contact your laptop’s manufacturer if you are unsure. (These are NOT available from the campus store.)

2.)     Network Cable – Network cables are needed to connect your computer to the port in your dorm. A network cable plug is wider than a phone cable. If you use a modem at home to connect to the internet then you are using a phone cable.  See the image to the right for a side by side comparison of a network cable to a phone cable. They may be purchased from the campus bookstore. Prices range from $5-$17

3.)     Hardware Specifications – Please visit the ResNet Website for our recommendations on Hard Drives, Processors, RAM, etc.

UPDATE YOUR SOFTWARE:

The following steps should be completed at home BEFORE bringing your computer to campus.  Access to the Internet and other network resources will be denied until all updates are complete. Refer to http://lasalle.edu/admin/it/resnet/CCA for more information on our network security.

  1. Run Windows Update – Your computer MUST have all critical security updates installed before access is granted to the La Salle network. Your Internet browser will be redirected to a Windows Update server if your computer is not up to date. Please note that illegal copies of Windows XP may not update and therefore prevent you access to our network. If you are unsure you may check your key at http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/windows.

  2. Verify Antivirus – If you are running an antivirus program other than McAfee Enterprise 8.0 it MUST be uninstalled. We provide McAfee free of charge to all La Salle residents.  Download it from the Student Services tab of the mylasalle portal. Just as with Windows updates, McAfee must be installed and up to date before access is granted to the La Salle network. Your Internet browser will redirect you to a McAfee download site if your definitions are not current.

  3. Remove Spyware and Adware – These slow down your machine and compromise the security of your personal information. Two good programs to do this are "SpyBot" and "AdAware". You can download these programs from the Student Services tab of the mylasalle portal.

  4. Prepare Network Settings. – Listed below is a summary of the changes you will need to make to your system before connecting to the network. You can download detailed instructions from the Student Services tab of the mylasalle portal.
    1. Computer Name – Set your computer name to match your La Salle User ID (e.g. smithj1)
    2. DHCP/DNS – Both set to obtain address automatically.
    3. Workgroup – Set to Explorer.local

We all look forward to meeting you this fall. For questions or concerns email resnet@lasalle.edu.
