How do I install and run anti-virus software?

This page describes how to install and configure the McAfee anti-virus software that is licenced by La Salle University for all students. It is important that you have an updated version of the software running on your computer at all times to prevent possible virus attacks that could jeopardize your own computer as well as others.

Installing McAfee
You will first need to access the McAfee download on the network F: drive. To map to the F: Drive do the following:

1. Right click My Network Neighborhood (or My Network Places) on the desktop and click on Map Network drive.

2. Select F: in the Drive dropdown. Type \\stu-srv1\public in the Folder textbox.

3. Make sure reconnect at logon is checked.

4. If you are a Windows 2000/XP user, you will need to connect as a different user. To do this click on the 'different user name' link. Type student\username in the User Name textbox and type your password in the Password textbox. (NOTE: Your password is your six digit birthday followed by a period (.) and then the first three letters of your last name, e.g. 022608_abc).

4. Click finish. A window should appear with the contents of the public folder.

After you have mapped to the F:\public folder, navigate to the Download\McAfee\7.1.0 folder. Double click on the Setup.exe file and follow the wizard to install McAfee 7.1.0.

NOTE: If you have another anti-virus software running you will have to uninstall it before you can install McAfee. To uninstall anti-virus software do the following.
1. XP Users: Click on Start --> Control Panel.
2000 Users: Click on Start --> Settings --> Control Panel.

2. Double click on Add/Remove Programs.

3. Select the anti-virus software you wish to remove (e.g. Norton, McAfee, etc).

4. Click the Remove button and follow the steps to uninstall the program.

Updating McAfee
To have McAfee retrieve the latest virus definitions right click on the McAfee shield icon that appears in the bottom right corner of your screen and select 'Update Now...'. A popup will appear saying Update in Progress.

Scanning your computer
To scan your computer to locate infected files right click on the McAfee shield icon that appears in the bottom right corner of your screen and select 'On-Demand Scan'. A popup box will appear. Click the Scan Now button. McAfee will detect and delete any harmful files it finds.

Scheduling McAfee to Update
For version 7.x (NT Workstation, Windows 2000, Windows XP)

1. Right click on the VirusShield icon located on the task bar.

2. Select “VirusScan Console…”

3. Double Click on AutoUpdate.

4. Click on Schedule.

5. Select: “enable”.

6. Click on the “Schedule” tab.

7. Create a schedule for your virus definitions to be updated automatically. Keep in mind that your computer will need to be turned on and connected to the Internet to complete the task.

8. Click OK.

9. Click OK.

Scheduling McAfee to Scan
For version 7.x (NT Workstation, Windows 2000, Windows XP)

1. Right click on the VirusShield icon located on the task bar.

2. Select “VirusScan Console…”.

3. Double Click on Scan All Fixed Disks.

4. Click on Schedule.

5. Select: “enable”.

6. Click on the “Schedule” tab.

7. Create a schedule for your computer to scan automatically.

Keep in mind that your computer will need to be turned on and connected to the Internet to complete the task.

8. Click OK.

9. Click OK.
