Using McAfee AutoUpdate
It is very important to have current virus definition files, and it's also a very easy task to automate. Follow these simple instructions to set your McAfee VirusScan to automatically update your virus definition files.
To begin:
- Go to your Start Menu
- Choose Programs, Network Associates, and then VirusScan Console

Once you're in the VirusScan Console, you will see in the Description column AutoUpdate. This feature updates the virus definitions.
- To update your virus definition files manually, click once on AutoUpdate
- Select the Task menu, then select Start
- A Mcafee AutoUpdate box will pop up and automatically update your virus definitions. When it is complete click the Close button or it will automatically close in 25 seconds.

- To schedule an automatic update, right click on AutoUpdate
- Select Properties with the left mouse button
- Click the Schedule button in the top right hand corner
- On the Task tab put a check in the Enable box
- Select the Select tab at the top of the screen

- Use the drop down list to select your prefered option. Daily or Weekly is recommended
- Network Associates usually releases new DATs either late Wednesday afternoon or early Thursday morning
- Set the hour you want it to update using the start time clock (local time)
- Make sure you choose a time that you computer is powered on
- Click OK
