Major General William Burns Army ROTC Grant for Room and Board

La Salle University is creating a scholarship program for ROTC students that will be named after U.S. Army Major General William Burns, a La Salle graduate who was a top negotiator for nuclear disarmament during the Reagan Administration. These scholarships will be available beginning in the 2008-09 academic year.

Students with ROTC Scholarships will receive full double room and board costs (14 meal plus plan $100) at La Salle. The ROTC scholarships from the U.S. Army provide full tuition costs for four years.

In addition to new students, the University will make scholarships available to ROTC students who are currently enrolled in the University.

A 1954 graduate of La Salle, General Burns is currently a member of University’s Board of Trustees and a former ROTC instructor on the La Salle faculty.

General Burns held a number of important posts in more than 50 years of committed service, first as a field artillery officer commanding several units, including a field artillery brigade in Germany and service in Vietnam. In 1981, he became the military representative on the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty delegation in Geneva, negotiating what was to become the only U.S.-Soviet treaty that eliminated an entire class of nuclear weapons. Later, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Political Military Affairs, and in 1987 President Ronald Reagan named him Director of the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency.

In 1993, Pennsylvania Gov. Robert Casey appointed him to the Commonwealth Court of Judicial Discipline of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

“We’re pleased to offer this scholarship both as a way to honor General Burns and to attract some of the best and brightest students to our school,” said John Dolan, La Salle’s Vice President for Enrollment Services. “The values and ethics they will learn at La Salle will be of great value to them when they assume military leadership roles.”

To be eligible for this room and board scholarship, the student must be a recipient of a full tuition Drexel Army ROTC scholarship and enrolled as a full-time student in good standing in the day program.   The amount of room and board scholarship will be reduced by any other grant or scholarships that the student may receive.
