La Salle University’s New Program for Teaching Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is delivered using A Multi-Disciplinary Approach that Includes Educating and Caring for the Entire Family.

WHEN
Begun in January 2009, La Salle University offers a twelve (12) credit certificate program that can be completed in one calendar year with course offereings throughout the year.

WHAT
Program provides educators with multi-disciplinary perspectives and approaches to working with children with ASD and their families.

HOW
Curriculum includes teams of academic and practicing professionals from varied disciplines and incorporates practicum-based opportunities for working with children with ASD.

WHO
The program is designed for current teachers and related professionals holding state certification credentials.

WHY
The autism certificate program is one component of a La Salle-wide initiative to bring attention to the need for coordinated sharing of knowledge, perspectives and advances in the support and education of individuals with autism and their families. As a center for educational, health, psychological and social service studies in the area, La Salle is staged to help address the many aspects of life touched by autism. Collaborating with other interested groups beyond the university community, La Salle hopes to provide an incubator for the development of advanced skills and accelerated sharing of emerging best practices in school and home for supporting these children and optimizing their human potential.

WHERE
Program elements will be offered at La Salle campuses and a practicum center at Hatboro-Horsham School District’s Simmons Elementary School.
