Program Sequence and Notes
A suggested program sequence would be two graduate courses per semester
(Fall and Spring). Early summer courses would include prerequisite
courses in preparation for appropriate Practica. Practicum I is
an early experience and should be scheduled as soon as Education
501 and Education 502 are completed. Basic prerequisites for Practicum
I include EDC 501 and EDC 502. Prerequisites for Practicum II include
Practicum I and EDC 510. Due to the intensive nature of the two
immersion experiences, no other courses may be taken while enrolled
in the Practica. Student teaching or supervised teaching is the
culminating field experience. All prerequisites (Music, Art, etc.)
must be completed prior to submission for certification.
Academic Advising
Initial program planning is set up in consultation with the Director
or the Program's Academic Advisor. While students are responsible
for monitoring their own progress through the program, individual
advising may be requested as needed.
PRAXIS
In order to be eligible for certification in the state of Pennsylvania,
the successful teacher candidate must pass the appropriate sub-tests
of the PRAXISs. The following sub-tests are required:
Core Battery
PPST Reading - Test Code 0710
PPST Writing - Test Code 0720
PPST Math - Test Code 0730
Fundamental Subjects - Test Code 0511
Professional Knowlege
Elementary Education - Test Code 0011
Special ED: Core Principles - Test Code 0353
It is suggested that the graduate student complete the Core Battery
components of the PRAXIS as soon as possible after EDC 501 and EDC
502 are completed. The Principles of Learning and Teaching K-6 and
the Elementary Education specialty test should be scheduled after
Practicum I. The Special Education specialty area tests should be
scheduled after Practicum II or during the student or supervised
teaching semester. Current passing scores and PRAXIS booklets are
available in the Graduate Education Office.
