Marriage and Family Therapy Program
Frequently Asked Questions

What is Marriage and Family Therapy?

Marriage and Family Therapy is an approach to mental health care which seeks to help people within the context of their families and their relationships, using family systems theories and interventions.

Its practitioners hold a common assumption that if the individual is to change, the context must change. Therefore, the unit of treatment is no longer the person, even if only a single person is interviewed. It is the set of relationships in which the person is embedded.

Who are Marriage and Family Therapists?

Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are mental health professionals trained in psychotherapy, family systems, and relationship issues.  They are licensed to treat mental and emotional disorders within the context of individuals, couples, marriage and family systems.

What do Marriage and Family Therapists do?

Marriage and Family Therapists evaluate and treat mental and emotional disorders and other health and behavioral problems, and address a wide array of relationship issues within the context of the individual and/or the family system.

Some of the problems that Marriage and Family Therapist help people with are:

  • Communication between family members, intimate partners, friends, coworkers or others.
  • Parental concerns such as learning effective approaches to discipline and how to effectively deal with children and/or adolescent’s behavior and emotional difficulties.
  • Marital or couple discord
  • Sexual difficulties and concerns
  • Feelings of depression, anxiety or loneliness
  • Unmanageable anger, hostility or violence

Marriage and Family Therapists are widely employed as clinicians and consultants in mental health clinics, hospitals, schools, drug and alcohol centers and a variety of other settings. Trained marriage and family therapists, are also used to conduct or direct research.

What is the Program?

The Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program at La Salle is one of four concentrations in the Clinical/Counseling Psychology Program.

It is a 48 credit hour program which is normally completed in three years, however can be completed in two.

It helps to prepare students for employment in professional setting with special training in marriage and family therapy.

It has been designed to fulfill the basic educational requirements for clinical membership in the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

It is excellent preparation for those students planning to pursue doctoral studies in marriage and family therapy.

It prepares students for licensure as Marriage and Family Therapists in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and most other states.

How does the Program progress?

The MFT program progresses from a knowledge base of core courses in systems theory and psychology, to a sequence of skills courses in assessment and intervention, to actual clinical practice, completed in a 12 month clinical placement in the final year.

Why study Marriage and Family Counseling At La Salle?

La Salle has been training counselors and therapists since 1979. Its faculty is highly qualified and posses a wide range of disciplinary expertise. Its resources are extensive, including: a state of the art library - The Connelly Library - with extensive holdings in psychology. The thoroughness of its training is widely recognized in the Philadelphia area and sets its graduates apart.

Is this a full-time or part-time program?

About one-third of our students attend full-time and two-thirds part time.

How long does it take to complete the program?

Usually it takes two years if you attend full-time and three years if you attend part-time, including summers.

What time of the day are the classes held?

Most classes are scheduled from 4:30-7:00 and 7:30-10:00.

Can I complete the program at Bucks without going to the Main Campus, or vice versa?

All concentrations are available at Main Campus and the Bucks Campus. Currently the Psychological Counseling concentration can be completed at Gwynedd-Mercy, other concentrations require attending some classes at Bucks or Main.

What is the longest amount of time before the program needs to be completed?

10 years

How do I complete the licensure requirements after I complete the M.A. program?

In addition to the 48 hour master’s degree, you need 12 additional hours (60 total). You also must pass a licensure examination and complete 3600 hours (2-3 years) of supervised work experience (a paid position).

What is the average age of the student?

Nearly half of our students come directly from undergraduate programs. The others vary widely in age, from those with a few years of work experience, to those at or near retirement age and planning a second career. We encourage students to learn from and assist one another.

How does each of the concentrations qualify a student for the job market?

The job market is good for all concentrations particularly for those with licensure.

Will graduation from this course enable me to become a school counselor?

We do not have a concentration in school counseling, but we are considering adding one. Currently students completing our program can obtain certification by taking courses at another university.

Do I have to take the MAT or GRE?

Yes, except if you already hold an M.A. or comparable degree.

What are the cutoff scores for the GRE and MATs?

We expect students to be above the 50th percentile on graduate norms, but take all credentials into consideration.

What is the minimum GPA La Salle University looks for to be accepted?

We usually require a 3.0 but take all credentials into consideration.

Which is better to take the MAT or GRE?

If you are applying to several programs, including doctoral programs, or if you do well on timed tests you should probably take the GRE. If you have been out of college for several years, or if you read widely you will usually do better with the MAT. Review directions and sample questions before deciding.

How long after my file is complete will I hear a decision and how will I be notified of the decision?

Usually within two week, and you will be notified by mail.

If there graduate housing available?

Yes, there are graduate apartments on campus.

What are the deadlines for each semester for applying?

We have rolling admission, but 3 weeks before the start of classes is the usual deadline.

Is parking a problem?

There is secure on-campus parking available on all campuses.
