Nursing Certificate Program -
Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Education Program (WOCNEP)

La Salle University's WOCNEP
prepares nurses to provide acute and rehabilitative care for people
with select disorders of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and
integumentary systems. WOC nurses provide direct and consultative
care for persons with abdominal stomas, wounds, fistulas, pressure
ulcers, and incontinence problems. The La Salle University's Wound,
Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Education Program enables
registered nurses who have earned baccalaureate degrees to prepare
for and receive initial certification as Wound, Ostomy, and Continence
(WOC) Nurses. La Salle's WOCNEP is fully accredited
by the WOCN Society.
Standards for Admission
- Evidence of successful academic achievement in completing a
baccalaureate degree in Nursing or other baccalaureate degree.
Course work must include: health assessment skills, leadership
and management, pharmacology, community health, research/statistics.
- Evidence of one year of current clinical experience following RN licensure.
- Current clinical nursing experience within five years prior to application (e.g., current, active practice, completion of a nurse refresher course or a clinical performace examination)
- Physical capability of performing the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence
Nursing role.
- Current RN licensure in Pennsylvania or in the state where the
clinical preceptorship is to be done.
- Current CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) certificate
- Current professional liability (malpractice) insurance
- Evidence of Health Assessment (Physical) by Physician or Nurse
Practitioner
- Criminal record check clearance
- Child abuse history clearance
- Personal Health Insurance Coverage
- Urine Drug Screening
- Two letters of reference from professors or supervisors. At
least one reference must be an academic reference
- A statement of philosophy
- The application for admission to the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence
Nursing Education Program, accompanied by the stipulated application
fee, payable to La Salle University.
Please note: N.B. Graduate Record Examination
(GRE) and Miller Analogies Test (MAT) are NOT required for acceptance
to the School Nurse Certificate Program.
Faculty from the MSN Admissions Committee will review the admission
documentation submitted by each applicant.
WOCNEP Advisement
All students are assigned a faculty advisor upon admission
to the WOCNEP. Faculty advisors are available by
appointment for student advisement concerning course selection any
time during the year and especially during the preregistration period.
Students must have approval from their advisor for all
courses they select. No pre-registrations are processed without
the advisor's permission.

NUR 591 Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nursing I
NUR 592 Wound, Ostomy, Continence Nursing II
Clinical Preceptorship Experience
160 hour clinical practicum offsite (arranged by the student
with appropriately credentialled preceptor). Students must complete the required clinical practicum hours and all required testing within nine months of completing NUR 592.
Credentials Required for WOCNEP Preceptors
Note Well: Students are required to obtain
their own appropriately credentialled preceptor and to make all
their financial agreements with the selected preceptor to complete
a minimum of 160 hours of clinical preceptorship.
Clinical preceptors must meet established qualifications. The criteria
for all qualifications for all preceptors, international and domestic
remain the same, i.e. international preceptors must meet the same
criteria for eligibility as other preceptors for WOC programs.
- Licensed registered nurse
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree with a major in nursing or Bachelor's
Degree in another field with documentation of Bachelor's Degree-level
equivalent competency in:
- Nursing health assessment
- Pharmacology
- Community health nursing
- Nursing leadership and management
- Research and statistics
- Certification: CWOCN or certified in the specialty in which
they teach or precept or Master's prepared RN who is expert in
continence care
and who holds nursing certification in the specialty in which they precept.
- Clinical Experience: At least one year full time, after graduation
from an WOCNEP/SC or one year following specialty certification
- Teaching Experience: Faculty- Evidence of teaching experience
beyond patient teaching
- Preceptor: Completion of preceptor workshop to include principles
of adult learning, clinical teaching strategies, and clinical
evaluation methodology or evidence of prior preceptor or clinical
nursing educator experience
- Clinical Preceptors: Must be able to demonstrate adequate client
population as defined by WOCN
- Current malpractice insurance or coverage
