Clinical-Counseling
Psychology
The M.A. program in Clinical-Counseling Psychology at La Salle University
offers an intensive program of studies with concentrations in the
following areas. Click on a concentration to review specific details.
Psychological Counseling
Marriage and Family Therapy
Addictions Counseling
Industrial/Organizational Psychology
Non-Degree Certificate Programs
While the program stresses skill training and clinical preparation
for the above concentrations, it also requires a common core of
psychological studies as a basis for disciplined practice in the
respective areas. Thus the program is excellent preparations for
those who wish to continue their studies and pursue a doctoral degree.
Preparation for Licensure
A certificate program of 60 credit hours (M.A. plus 12 hours) is
available to help prepare students for licensure as Professional
Counselors or Marriage and Family Therapists in Pennsylvania, New
Jersey, Delaware and most other states.
The Program
The program is a 48 credit program which can be completed in either
three years (on average six credit hours per term) or two years
(on average nine credits per term).
Program Progression
The program has been crafted to provide a sequential experience
for each student. The progression in each instance is from knowledge
base, to skill development, to application. There is an emphasis
throughout the program on the integration of theory and practice.
There is also an emphasis on a holistic perspective which teaches
that humans are unique beings systemically embedded in family and
societal groups and capable of finding and using the resources within
them.
Clinical Preparation
Once students have a sound knowledge of psychological theory and
appropriate skill training in the program, they obtain practicum
and internship positions in line with their respective concentrations.
The typical placement is from 12 to 15 hours a week and runs two
to four terms, depending on the concentration. The Philadelphia
area, with many nationally recognized agencies and clinics, is especially
rich in its mental health resources.
The university also operates its own clinic -- The Community Center
for Counseling & Psychological Services -- in which a number
of students serve their internships. The clinic is equipped with
facilities for doing direct and monitored supervision of clinical
work. It is used well by the community and has earned a reputation
as a highly regarded community resource.
Expected Outcomes
For some students, the program will be a springboard for doctoral
studies. For others, in each of the concentrations, the goals will
be more variable. The program is designed to assist students in
meeting the educational and practicum requirements for licensure
or certification in most areas of professional counseling, including
Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family
Therapist.
Three Convenient Locations
All concentrations of the Graduate Psychology program are
available at the Main Campus, located in Northwestern Philadelphia
and the Bucks Campus, located in Newtown, PA. Currently the Psychological
Counseling concentration can be completed at the Gwynedd-Mercy Campus
in Montgomery County; other concentrations require attending some
