Speech-Language Pathology - Prerequisites

In order for students to meet 2005 ASHA certification standards at the ASHA Web site: (http://www.asha.org/about/membership-certification/handbooks/slp/slp_standards_new.htm), La Salle University's Speech-Language-Hearing Science Program includes prerequisites to graduate study.

The chair of the admissions committee evaluates graduate applications to determine whether the applicant has met all prerequisites. If the student has not met these requirements (equivalent course title and description at the undergraduate institution) the student is required to meet these requirements prior to entering the MS program. In certain situations, students may complete the necessary prerequisites simultaneously with graduate study. Students must fulfill prerequisite requirements prior to obtaining the master's degree. For each prerequisite, the pertinent subject matter can be acquired by taking the appropriate undergraduate course at La Salle University or an equivalent course at another institution. Obtaining a grade of B or above is required. If your bachelor's degree is not in communication sciences and disorders, you may be interested in La Salle University's new Pre-SLP Program.

Prerequisites:

The applicant must have transcript credit (which could include course work, advanced placement, CLEP, or examination of equivalency) for each of the following areas: biological sciences, physical sciences, social/behavioral sciences, and mathematics. To meet 2005 ASHA certification requirements, students need a course in both the biological and the physical sciences. If not, they must take an undergraduate course in this area which does not count towards the master's degree.

To fulfill these requirements, La Salle University suggests:
BIO 161 and BIO 162: Anatomy and Physiology I and II (biological sciences)
  OR
BIO 164WB: Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology

HSC 212: The Physical Science of Physiological Instrumentation (physical sciences)
HSC 217: Statistics for the Health Sciences or ECN 213 (mathematics). Statistics is required for graduate study.
EDC 103: Educational Psychology or PSY 210 Developmental Psychology and PSY 220 Psychopathology (social/behavioral sciences)

The applicant must demonstrate knowledge of basic human communication and swallowing processes, including their biological, neurological, acoustic, psychological, developmental, and linguistic and cultural bases.
To fulfill this requirement, La Salle University suggests:
At least 15 credits in approved and appropriately distributed courses in human communication processes:

SLH 100: Introduction to Language and Communication

SLH 200: Phonetics

SLH 202: Anatomy and Physiology of Speech Hearing Mechanisms

SLH 203: Language Development

SLH 211: Acoustic Bases of Speech and Hearing

SLH 306: Neurological Bases of Communication

  Other Prerequisites

SLH 102: Introduction to Communication Disorders

SLH 304: Introduction to Audiology

SLH 308: Clinical Procedures in Speech and Language Pathology

SLH 314: Diagnostic Procedures in Speech and Language Pathology
