The Mission of the Biology Department runs parallel to the Mission of La Salle University as espoused by St John Baptist de la Salle, the founder of the Christian Brothers Order.
  1. To treat all students with respect. Whether a student is struggling with the material or needs additional challenge, professors recognize that nurturing the spirit, not demeaning effort is as important as imparting specific pieces of information
  2. To have a passion for teaching. Excitement cannot be passed along to students unless the professor feels it within him or herself. La Salle makes excellence in teaching the prime factor in determining who will stand in front of a class.
  3. To teach practically. Our department wants to assure that all graduates have developed the skills needed to move on to successful careers. That’s why there is an emphasis on laboratory work, research and internships. Hands-on learning by doing is an important part of our program.
  4. To treat each student as an individual. With an average class size of 20, our faculty will know you as a person and as a student. A recent survey showed that alumni named their relationship with faculty as the single best part of their experience at La Salle.
  5. To expose students to the latest research techniques and equipment. We are very proud of our facilities and the fact that undergraduate students not only have the opportunity to use them but are required to do so.
  6. To help you to become a scientist. Scientists have a certain way of looking at the world. Through small classes involving interchanges with faculty and fellow students, we expect to help you to develop a perspective that will serve you well throughout your career and your life.
