Top 10 - Romantic Movies since 1990
In honor of Valentine’s Day, I put together a list of my top 10 romantic films since 1990. 10) Titanic — A young man from the lower class falls in love with a rich, engaged socialite on the doomed Titanic. Who wouldn’t find that romantic? 9) Walk the Line — So it may not be a romantic film by genre, but the real-life love Johnny Cash harbored for June Carter cannot be mirrored in any film. 8) The Wedding Planner — Mary, a lonely wedding planner, finally finds love with the groom of a wedding she is planning. 7) Pretty Woman — An unlikely pair, a hooker and a rich businessman, find love in this classic Julia Roberts film. 6) Cruel Intentions — Although this mid-’90s film may be remembered for elements other than romance, this movie makes the list for one amazing scene. Counting Crows’ “Colorblind” plays in the background while Annette is riding up the escalator at the train station. An out of focus figure stands at the top of the escalator, but as Annette moves closer to him, the camera focuses, and soon she is standing in front of her love, Sebastian. 5) Bounce — Buddy falls in love with a widow, Abby, whose husband died in a plane crash after trading tickets for the fatal flight with Buddy. Abby must deal with the death of her husband, moving forward in life without him and finding that the one person she could love played a small role in his death. 4) The Cutting Edge — This classic early ’90s film features Doug, an injured and crass hockey player, and Kate, an ice princess figure skater, who work together to win the Olympic Gold in paired figure skating. The two passionately butt heads throughout the entire movie, creating both comedy and a wonderfully light-hearted romantic story. 3) Meet Joe Black — Death (i.e. The Grim Reaper) comes to Earth in the form of Brad Pitt to claim the life of a wealthy man, but in the process he falls in love with the man’s daughter and learns important lessons about life and love. 2) A Walk to Remember — Landon is a tough guy, coasting through life, and Jamie is the preacher’s quiet daughter, secretly dying of cancer. All Jamie wants is a miracle before her early death and she finds it in Landon, who, despite his tough façade, falls head over heels for the innocent Jamie. 1) The Notebook — This film is the beautiful story of a summer love that lasts through years of separation and the heartbreaking Alzheimer’s disease. Noah is a simple country boy who falls for the socialite Allie one summer. Noah tells the story of their love in hopes that it will help Allie remember him. biagio1@lasalle.edu |
