Take Back the Night inspires students
The rally opened with an introductory speech explaining the historical significance of the event. The first rally of this kind was conducted in San Francisco in 1978. They have been taking place around the country ever since. During the rally, La Salle was recognized for challenging itself to promote anti-sexual violence legislation. La Salle’s efforts were acknowledged by the students in attendance as well. Steve Levit, a freshman biology major, said that the rally, “…helped open my eyes to the issues of violence against women.” “It’s great that the university has come so far in policy by taking a stance on these issues, but the change can happen when individuals stand up to say “No,” junior Mike Farrell said. This is when we will have a better campus, city, country, and society, where this will no longer be tolerated.” Farrell’s comment suggests that change will only occur when people stand up for themselves and others. S.A.V.E.’s rally provided the La Salle population with the knowledge and motivation to speak out against sexual and domestic violence. The rally was a reminder to those who are threatened by such issues that there are resources out there for them to get the help they need. La Salle “takes back the night” every year. Students are encouraged to participate in the event. Sexual and domestic violence is a huge problem throughout the United States. Although La Salle is only doing a small part to help in the problem, it is something. Every little bit helps. Every voice, no matter how meek it is, can be heard. sussmanh1@lasalle.edu |
