Digs: Sara Schreiner and Heather Steacker
When sophomores Sara Schreiner and Heather Steacker were selecting the decorations for their St. Bernard dorm room, they decided to combine their own personalities and tastes to make a colorful and creative room. Steacker wanted to decorate her side of the room in a pink décor, her favorite color, while Schreiner wished to blanket her side in a leopard print pattern. Steacker’s bed coverings are bright pink, from the sheets to the pillows. Only feet away, Schreiner’s bed is draped in leopard print. Although the two color schemes may not normally match, Steacker and Schreiner bridged the gap between their tastes with a few interesting decorations. They covered the entire wall of windows with long, sheer pink curtains. Over the top of the windows, they twirled a black curtain, running the entire length of the windows. “We got the idea to do that from our RA [Resident Assistant],” Steacker said. “We wanted to make the room feel more homey.” Not only do the curtains give a cozy feel to the room, but they also were a nice compromise for the girls—pink for Steacker and black to go along with Schreiner’s motif. “We didn’t know which colors to use at first, so we just chose the pink and black,” Schreiner said. “It wasn’t hard, either. We just had to throw some thumbtacks up there.” They said that the process of tacking the curtains up was quite comical, as they were both standing on chairs pushed against the window, trying not to fall. The work that they put into dressing up that side of the room has definitely paid off. The girls bought most of the decorations in their room at Wal-Mart and Bed, Bath & Beyond. “The curtains weren’t expensive at all,” Schreiner said. Each curtain panel cost only $5, and even though they needed to buy several panels, they agree that the overall cost was well worth the feel that the curtains give the room. The pink and black theme carries beyond the windows, as the girls used the same material to cover their doorless closets. The girls have tried to cover every inch of space that they can with items and pictures that illustrate their personalities. Schreiner’s wall is covered in Gamma Sigma Sigma memorabilia and in the middle of the room, they have a hanging Valentine’s Day decoration. They also have a futon in between their beds, which allows for their friends to relax and enjoy the comfort of the room. “Everyone likes the curtains,” Steacker said. “There’s always a lot of people in here.” collettaj1@lasalle.edu |
