Digs

Everyone has a macabre side. Whether it is our fascination with the darker side of life, scary movies or just plain morbid fascination, everyone likes to deviate from the “we’re happy” mentality to play on the deathly side of things.

Halloween decoration doesn’t quite reach the macabre side of life, but consider it a healthy push in the right direction.

All throughout La Salle’s campus, dormitory floors are coming together to get everyone in the Halloween spirit, putting up decorations to set the mood that only Halloween can provide.

With Halloween being so close to midterms, it’s understandable that some people couldn’t find the time to decorate.

“I wanted to decorate, but I didn’t have the time to go shopping, due to all the midterms I had to study for,” said sophomore Ashley Mancuso. Sophomore Laura Hopkins had a different reason: inaction.

“My floor never talked about decorating, so I guess they didn’t want to,” Hopkins said.

She does, however, have a pumpkin displayed proudly in her bedroom window. Some floors, like St. Basil’s 1R, really have the spirit going. Walking through the hall there is like wandering through a haunted house. The lights in the ceiling are tinted with saran wrap and tissue paper to dim them and give them a black and orange hue. The walls are lined with streamers and other decorations and the mood is well set. Upstairs, Basil’s 3R used more simple tactics to capture the Halloween spirit.

Sophomore Ashley Keates was in charge of decorating Basil 3R and shared her process.

“My goal was to come up with a decoration plan that was fun and intriguing, yet not too disruptive to the daily hall traffic. It had to be fun, but out of the way so it wouldn’t get ruined, and we had to stay within budget,” she said.

She planed to have “group time” with the floor to make and decorate cookies, make decorations that line the door frames and window clings and posters on the wall.

Each door also had a personalized Halloween nametag for residents to proudly display on their doors.

All in all, it’s good to see Lasallians moving blue and gold aside for a week or two to proudly display their black and orange.
