Omega Phi chapter participates in Crowbowl

Some people may ask themselves, “What do fraternities, football, charitable causes and Crows have in common?” The answer is the annual Crowbowl, held Nov. 4, hosted by Lambda Chi Phi chapter from Drexel University and Phi Kappa Chi chapter of Temple University at Ambler.

The national chapters and colonies of Alpha Chi Rho, commonly nicknamed “Crow,” convened on Temple Ambler with their best flag football skills.

The first games began on that chilly Saturday morning and ended in an evening with virtually all winners.

Proceeds from Crowbowl 2006 support two foundations in need of brotherly help. The Children’s Wish Foundation and Feed the Children were the beneficiaries of the flag football event. Each contribution to these organizations aids children who are facing long-term illnesses.

President of La Salle’s Omega Phi chapter of Alpha Chi Rho, Rick Barca, is proud to have been part of such an event.

“[We] emphasize the importance of giving to worthy causes, and Crowbowl 2006 is an event that allows Crows from around the country to pull our resources together to accomplish this,” he said.

“In addition to helping out great philanthropies, Crowbowl serves as an event in which brothers from all chapters can come together in the spirit of brotherhood.”

And a day of brotherhood it was. Undergraduates, as well as alums from each respective chapter, came together for the cause. Though competitive, all chapters and colonies congratulated each other on wins and supported each other through losses.

La Salle’s Omega Phi chapter of Alpha Chi Rho began with some difficulty, losing their first game, but brilliantly showcased their football maneuvers to win the next three games, placing them in sixth place overall. Their greatest achievement was defeating the Lock Haven chapter, the team that eliminated Omega Phi last year.

The 19-13 victory over Lock Haven brought La Salle the confidence and satisfaction to advance to the next round. Despite the wins and losses, it was more than merely a flag football tournament.

According to Barca, “it is about coming together and realizing that you are a part of a national organization that transcends yourself and your chapter.”
