Digs

The sun is always shining in Townhouse C4. These housemates have spent all year working hard on decorating their beach-themed downstairs.

As soon as you walk in you can’t help but notice the wallpaper fish placed all over the walls with the light blue curtain hanging over to make it look as though you’re underwater. Lauren Taylor , a senior accounting and art history major, describes it as the housemates’ own tropical paradise. One thing in the house that stands out is the large palm tree that sits in the corner of the dining room.

“I had the palm tree in my room last year and I didn’t want to give it up this year so we used that as a starting point,” said senior marketing and organizational management major Christine Morris.

Morris and her mother made the tree by using a large tube and covering it with fabric and attaching fake leaves.

Also in the dining room hangs a sign that reads “Luau Party” with flowered placemats hanging along the wall, which signifies just how creative these girls are.

All of the furniture in the living room is covered, and features some underwater friends to sit alongside of you. On the couches sit “Ollie” the octopus, “Clare” the crab and “Thomas Timothy” the turtle. These three pillows were named by Morris and fellow roommate, senior accounting and finance student Nicole Maier.

Next to the couch you will find “Melvin the Monkey,” who is a blow-up doll. On the stairwell going upstairs, there are five fish which are named for each of the five roommates.

The girls not only made their room decorative, they also made sure some of the decorations were practical for everyday use.

“I need a lot of lighting in the house because I just can’t stand it when it’s dark,” Maier said.

So the girls opted to drape hanging lights all across the walls of the room, and also hang lantern lights off of the ceiling. Another useful thing the girls have made decorative are labels for light switches and all of the different drawers and cabinets in the kitchen.

“There are so many different light switches down here that I got tired of turning on the wrong one all of the time,” Jess Phelan, senior English and communication major said. “I started labeling them, and then it just extended into the kitchen, and the next thing I knew every drawer and door in the kitchen was appropriately labeled.”
