Theresa-Ann Gillen, a senior nursing major, resides in the townhouses. Her room reflects warmth, cheer and a welcoming demeanor. Many associate her with all of these qualities. Anita, now the age of 30, is one of Peter’s half sisters and is his role model. When Peter was in third grade, he had to write a report on the person whom he admires most. He chose Anita without hesitation. Today, at the age of 19, Anita still remains one of the most important people in his life, and he continues to fight for her and her battle with lupus. Not only does the room parallel Gillen’s personality, but it also helps her feel upbeat. “Whenever people see my room, they always say that it’s very me,” Gillen said. The doorway is ornamented with multicolor fringe, ranging from white to pink to blue and finally orange. This fringe hangs all the way to the floor.“The room is very upbeat and cheerful. That’s something I need to see when I wake up in the morning and come back at night,” she said. The bed has a homemade canopy, created with white cloth. It is fashioned with a blue floral spread and topped off among teal, purple and pink pillows. “I always wanted a canopy bed, but I never got one. So this year I decided to craft my own,”she said. Next to the bed is an old-fashioned white dial phone with golden trim. Above the bed hangs a white dome, and in the center of the room, a stream of pink diamonds suspend from the ceiling, adding depth and character to the room. Next to the bed sits a blue armchair, adding to the room’s decorative look. It is not the usual butterfly chair that is nowadays found in most dorm rooms. To the chair’s right is a small end table with various knick knacks and fake flowers to brighten the place up. Also, oddly scattered around the room are different types of fans. Gillan loves fans and actually collects them. The fan on the door, which her best friend brought back from Hawaii, even doubles as a hat. Gillen’s room reflects a vivacious, jovial mood that she can wake up to in the morning and fall asleep to at night. sloanek1@lasalle.edu |
