Senior communication and English major Tina Lumbis sleeps in style in her black, white and red-themed bedroom in her townhouse. She always liked the classy and sophisticated quality of black and white. Lumbis revamped the plain white walls of her room with a border of black and white photographs, encompassing her four years at La Salle. “I like my border of black and white photos because it tells the story of my life at La Salle, with my experiences and friends on it,” she said.. The theme is carried over onto Lumbis’ bed with black and white sheets and a black comforter, as well as black and white throw pillows depicting the Philadelphia skyline that she loves. Lumbis is from Sweet Valley, Pa. The small town life that she experienced growing up in an old, remodeled farm house is nothing like the city life she has experienced since coming to La Salle. Two of the main reasons Lumbis chose La Salle was her love of the city skyline and the good-old Philadelphia sports teams. Lumbis also has a black, white and red pillow that looks like it’s covered in newspaper cutouts. She added some funk to her classy décor with a black feather boa decorating the foot of her bed. A red lamp with a shade also depicting a skyline decorates the nightstand next to her bed. The entire room takes on a hazy red glow when the sun shines through the red curtains that hang over Lumbis’ window. The wall above Lumbis’ bed showcases her heritage with a Native American dream catcher and a Lithuanian sports T-shirt. She also has a calendar with pictures of Ireland, representative of both her heritage and her upcoming trip to Ireland for Spring Break, which she is very excited about.
Lumbis also spruced up her walls with posters of the Beatles, a passion that began as a young child listening to her friend’s parents’ records. The small town native said she turned to the Beatles for comfort during the start of her freshman year as she adjusted to the major changes of college life in the city. A poster of The Wizard of Oz, her favorite movie, also garnishes the wall. Lumbis said she remembers watching the movie every day when she was young, after which she would go to the front door of her house and wait for her brother to come home from school. Next to her Wizard of Oz poster is a shelf on the wall with a rose on it. Lumbis said the rose is her favorite flower, but for more personal reasons than the typical romantic nature of the flower. Rose is Lumbis’ middle name, as well as her grandmother’s first name. When Lumbis has friends stopping by to see her fashionable room, they can enjoy her classy, yet funky style while sitting in a black and red bean bag chair. Of all her years living at La Salle, this is Lumbis’ favorite style for her room. “This year my style is more mature,” she said. “I don’t get home much, so I really wanted to make my room like my home.” olsent1@lasalle.edu |
