Fellow Greeks advise students to go Greek for the week

It’s that time of year again. It’s the time of year that Greek organizations on campus live for.

Greek Week’s theme this year is “Greekstock,” five days of peace, love and Greeks.

The fraternities and sororities started the week with a service project, and will also end with another service event. They began with a neighborhood clean-up Sunday, March 25 and will finish with an Easter egg hunt for the children of Building Blocks Daycare Friday, March 30.

Greek Week is very important to Greek life, and is a way for all of the groups to come together. The neighborhood clean-up began last semester and is becoming a regular event each semester for the Greek organizations on campus. Each Greek chapter is assigned a street around the campus and picks up trash on the sidewalks and streets.

“From what I know, it is very important to win the events of Greek Week,” said Meaghan Walsh, sophomore Delta Phi Epsilon new recruit. “It demonstrates how hard an organization works together and their dedication to their fraternity or sorority.”

“I know my chapter takes a lot of pride in winning individual events,” said Bill Smart, senior Finance major and member of Sigma Phi Lambda. “Everyone is competitive and doesn’t like to lose, so winning the events gives us pride in our fraternity.”

Attendance is also a major factor in Greek Week activities.

“Of course it’s important to win, but just as important is the attendance,” Smart said. “It’s a crucial part of winning, and even if we don’t win an event, we’re still happy to be hanging out with our brothers and all of the other brothers and sisters of other fraternities and sororities.”

Events this week consist of Alpha Theta Alpha’s Wingfest, karaoke and a volleyball tournament.

However, what seems to be the most popular event among the fraternities, sororities and even other students is the crowning of the Greek God and Goddess.

“It has become a great tradition over the years,” said sophomore Joe Polizzi, President of InterFraternity Sorority Council (IFSC) and Vice President of Sigma Phi Lambda Fraternity.

“The winner of Greek God and Goddess is almost as important as the winner of Greek Week. The week usually builds up to Thursday night, and the talent portion of the night is great because it showcases the talent of each chapter.”

This special event allows for all of the different fraternities and sororities to display their creative sides and to just have fun.

“The Greek God and Goddess event always draws large crowds comprised of Greeks and non-Greeks, which really shows the support of the La Salle community,”said Meg Kristiniak, senior ISBT major and member of Alpha Sigma Tau (AST). “I’m really looking forward to the competition because last year AST came in a close second for Greek Goddess, but as my final year at La Salle, coming in first would have a lot of meaning.”

All guests at this event are asked to bring one non-perishable food item to be donated to a local food bank.

“We work really hard as a fraternity to be successful at all of the events,” said Christopher Vokolos, senior Delta Sigma Phi member. “This week is about coming closer as an organization and having fun together. It takes a lot of time and effort, so to see everyone involved and to come out on top would be great.”

IFSC would like to see more non-Greeks come out to show support and enjoy themselves.

“This week isn’t about Greeks competing against other Greeks,” Smart said. “ It’s about us getting our names out to the school. It’s us showing our fellow students that we do more than what they think. I’d definitely like to see more non-Greek students come out and see what kinds of events we have and to just have some fun.”
