RSA hosts first Basil Bash

St. Basil Court held its first-ever large scale outdoor event, Basil Bash, on Sunday, April 9. Both a barbecue and a concert, the bash was held from 1-5 p.m. It was organized by St. Basil’s Resident Student Association (RSA). Basil’s RSA Board consists of a group of elected students that plan events like this to bring dorm residents together.

Students gathered in the sunny April weather and lined up for hamburgers and hot dogs. Frisbees, hula hoops, sumo wrestling costumes and water balloons were provided to transform what could have been a long day of studying indoors into a fun outdoor event.

Since Basil Bash was the first event of its kind to take place in the new building, members of the RSA had to start from scratch when thinking of an end-of-the-year celebration. RSA President Kevin Gianfortune contacted local singer-songwriter Matt Duke’s record company to see if he would be interested in providing the event with live entertainment.

St. Basil scheduled a fire drill at 1 p.m. to encourage students to stay outside for the activities, food, and music. Student performances by Dino Dedic, Kyle Abbott, Aaron Spence and Jenn Smock took place prior to Duke’s set at 3 p.m.

Reflecting on the events of the day, RSA member Meggin Forti said, “Our board’s hard work really paid off since so many people attended and enjoyed the events.”

Basil Bash will most likely be repeated next year, such as the events of other dorms that have become highly anticipated annual celebrations. The annual BDG Luau took place In North Dorms, Bernard, Denis and George’s on Tuesday, April 11.
