Looking for an opportunity to learn more about National Security? The College Republicans are sponsoring National Security Week next week. This week will consist of three different events aimed at promoting knowledge around campus. This week’s Spotlight! caught up with Chris Caimano, Treasurer of the College Republicans, to get more information about the events.
Spotlight: Are all students allowed to attend these events?
Chris Caimano: All students are welcome and encouraged to attend these events.
National security is an issue that affects us all. It is something that we all have to be concerned about, whether we are Democrats, Republicans or Independents. We are looking to get the whole campus interested and informed on this issue.
SP: When and where will each event be held?
CC: The first event, a visit from Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick of the 8th
Congressional District, will take place Tuesday, April 11 at 12:30 p.m. in
Olney 100. The second event will feature La Salle’s own terrorism and intelligence expert Ed Turzanski. This will take place on Wednesday, April 12 at 1 p.m., also in Olney 100. The final event will be a town hall meeting that will be co-sponsored by the Student’s Political Association. This will take place in the Union Building 310 at 5:30 p.m. and will include free food.
SP: How did you come up with the idea for this week?
CC: We came up with the idea for this event as a group. We wanted to sponsor an event that would be informative and raise political awareness around campus. I am currently an intern for Congressman Fitzpatrick, so I was able to talk to the right people to invite him to La Salle. We were also fortunate enough to have Professor Turzanski volunteer to speak this week.
SP: What do you hope La Salle students will get out of these events?
CC: We hope that this program will inform La Salle students about this very important issue that is facing America today. Since the events of 9/11, we oftentimes forget that we are under constant threat of a terror attack. It
is absolutely essential that we know what is going on in the world around us.
SP: Do you hope for more events like this in the future?
CC: We certainly hope to have many more events like this in the future. We are gearing up for the campaign season and we are looking forward to helping out Lynn Swann, Rick Santorum and other Republican candidates. We are also looking forward to having many events on campus with the Student's Political Association and Young Democrats. We are always looking for new members. We meet every Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Olney 324, so stop by and see what we are all about.
