Fall fest offers autumn fun
Members of the InterFraternity and Sorority Council (IFSC) usually plan one major event per semester. Greek Week takes place during the spring semester, and in the past, Spirit Week was the fall event. This year, though, there has been a change. “Nobody really liked Spirit Week. It had too much of a high school connotation, and we weren’t getting enough Greeks and non-Greeks to come out,” Ryan Meisser, president of the IFSC said. The introduction of Fall Fest, “got a really good reaction,” he said. Meisser sees Fall Fest as a good publicity opportunity for the Greek organizations on campus. “It allows Greeks and non-Greeks to do activities together, and people can see what we really do,” Meisser said. Fall Fest runs from Oct. 30-Nov. 4, with a different event scheduled for each day. Monday will feature a showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in the Dan Rodden Theater. Popcorn, soda and candy will be provided. The week’s banner event, according to Meisser, will be the Halloween Costume Ball in the Hayman Center on Oct. 31 from 7-11 p.m. Food and a DJ will be provided, and prizes will be given out for Best Dressed. All students need to get in is a can of food that will be donated to charity. Donating a can of food is “something I would like to see happen at all Greek events,” Meisser said. “It doesn’t really cost the student anything, and it can be really helpful.” Thursday’s volleyball tournament will be a competition between different Greek organizations, and will take place from 4-6 p.m. Although non-Greeks are not invited to play, they are encouraged to watch the games and eat the food that will be provided there. Delta Phi Epsilon will host its fourth annual Deepher Dude competition Friday at 6 p.m. in the Dan Rodden Theater. Deepher Dude is a male beauty pageant in which each contestant represents a campus organization and must answer questions about themselves and their group. Price of admission will be $2 and all proceeds will go to benefit Delta Phi Epsilon’s philanthropies, Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD) and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF). On Saturday, the IFSC is sponsoring a neighborhood clean-up day from 1-3 p.m. “The neighborhood really needs to be cleaned up. We shouldn’t live like this,” Meisser said. The area being cleaned up runs all the way from the Manor to Wister Street to behind Chew Street. Fraternities with houses off-campus will concentrate on the streets they live on. One important part of the day will be the community involvement. The IFSC will be canvassing the neighborhood to invite people from the area to join in the clean-up. They will also be invited to a barbeque afterwards, and will get free tickets to the football game. With hundreds of students and neighbors expected, the IFSC is anticipating a huge turnout for this event. curleys1@lasalle.edu |
