MAD artist to lecture at La Salle

Ever wondered what crazy minds help create MAD magazine? On Oct. 9, you can find out when Sam Viviano, the art director for MAD magazine, lectures at 3:30 p.m. in the Dan Rodden Theater. Spotlight contacted Jon Caroulis, the La Salle Director of Media Relations, to get more information.

Spotlight: So what will he be talking about exactly?

Jon Caroulis: He will be talking about working for, and on, MAD magazine. He will also talk about drawing for it and some of its history. He’ll bring examples of some of his artwork with him to show around.

SP: So then is it mostly for DArt students?

JC: Oh no, anyone can attend. This is open to the public.

SP: But he will be doing special things for DArt majors?

JC: Yes. He will be lecturing in two DArt classes. One is Monday at 2 p.m. and the other is Tuesday at 11 a.m.

SP: How did La Salle get Viviano to come?

JC: Well, the connection is this: Bro. Gabriel Fagan is an English teacher here. He taught Viviano many years ago in a high school in Detroit. They stayed in touch over the years, and one day Viviano said that he could come speak at La Salle. When I found out about this opportunity I jumped at it, because I’ve always loved MAD magazine. It’s also being made possible due to the Concerts and Lecture series here at La Salle.
