Junior Jonathan Webster named SGA President

This past Thursday and Friday, April 12 and 13, La Salle’s Student Government Association (SGA) held executive board elections for the 2007-2008 school year. After running uncontested, junior management major Jonathan Webster won the presidency of SGA for the next school year with 231 votes in his favor.

Webster has been involved in SGA since his freshman year at La Salle, where he served as executive senator of his freshman class and won the Rookie of the Year award at the SGA formal. He was an SGA affiliate his sophomore year, but returned as executive senator of his junior class this year.

Though he wanted to serve on the executive board his senior year, he never put too much thought into running for president.

“After seeing how huge of a commitment being president of SGA was, I wasn’t sure if I was ready for it,” Webster said.

However, when no one decided to run for the presidency position, he took the opportunity to run himself.

“Others were looking at the position and realized they weren’t going to have enough time to fully handle the responsibility,” Webster said. “So, I decided that if others weren’t going to do it then I needed to step up.”

After getting the required 100 supportive signatures, Webster began his campaign.

“I really used the same campaigning approach as I have used in the past,” he said. “It is easy for me to go and talk to people, and I used this strength to my benefit. Of course, running unopposed took a lot of pressure off as well.”

He has already begun to think about what changes he wants to make for next year, as well as what he would like to keep the same.

“I still want to hold all of the classic events that SGA puts together, but my main goal is to get SGA’s name out there to the student community,” Webster said.

One way in which Webster hopes to gain more publicity is by attending each Day One session and get people to understand from their freshman year how important SGA is and what it can do for the students.

“Right now I am looking forward to the challenges that await me,” Webster said. “It is encouraging to see how the last three SGA presidents have handled the position.”

Webster encourages all students and faculty to say hello when they see him on campus, as he will be available at any time for help.

“I appreciate the confidence that the voters have instilled in me,” Webster said. “I have great people and a great E-board behind me, and together we won’t let the students down.”

Rounding out the rest of the executive board is Executive Vice-President of Student Affairs Pete England, Vice-President of Business Affairs Stasia Ford and Vice-President of Public Affairs Chris Dougherty.

Senate elections will be held this coming Thursday and Friday, April 19 and 20, and students can vote for their respective class senators. Voting will be held in the Union during free period, and from 5-7 p.m. in the Blue & Gold Dining Commons and in Treetops.
