WEXP show attempts to break world record

If you’ve always dreamed of breaking a world record, be sure to tune in to WEXP’s World Record Attempt. The radio station will try to host the world’s longest quiz show, clocking in at 35 consecutive hours. The broadcast will start 1 p.m Friday, April 13 at and will end at midnight April 15. Spotlight! caught up with sophomore communication major Matt Neder, promotions director for WEXP, to get more information.

Spotlight: How did the idea for this come about?

Mike Neder: This idea has been in construction for a few years, but it really came about this year through the collective minds of myself, Programming Director and sophomore communication major Mike Viso and senior communication major Adam Bagni, the general manager of WEXP.

S: What is the current world record?

MN: We are trying to reach 35 consecutive hours—the current record is 30.

S: How will the marathon be set up?

MN: I will be the quiz master for the event, asking the questions to the contestants. A different question must be asked every 10 seconds for the 35 hours, and any repeated questions means the quiz show is over. Adam Bagni will be the floor manager because there is an intricate process involving recording and documenting the attempt. Rotating medical personnel must also be on hand for the entire attempt in four-hour intervals. Mike Viso will remain a contestant for the entire length of the attempt. The second contestant will be rotated every few hours, so the game will be between a tired mind and a few fresh ones.

S: Can anyone be a contestant? If so, how does he or she sign up?

MN: Students interested in being a contestant need to contact either myself at nederm1@lasalle.edu or Mike Viso at visom1@lasalle.edu as soon as possible.

S: Do you have anything else to add?

MN: Because of World Record rules, technically only the quiz master will receive credit for breaking the world record, but we as a group are more concerned about doing this to really put WEXP on the map, not only around campus, but to the surrounding community as well. There will hopefully be media coverage of the event, as we will be reaching out to local newspapers, radio stations and television stations to help promote this world record attempt.
