La Salle hosts night of magical music

There’s nothing like a little wizard rock to chase away those winter blues. If being cooped up in your dorm room makes you want to run away to Hogwarts, drop by the Dunleavy room at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 23, where you’ll be greeted by five Harry Potter-themed bands. Spotlight! caught up with sophomore communication major Emily Brennan, one of the show’s organizers, to find out more about the event.

Spotlight: How did you guys get the idea for this concert?

Emily Brennan: Last semester, Dr. Vincent Kling taught an Honors literature class entitled “Blessing or Blasphemy?” that featured the Harry Potter books. In conjunction with the class, Dr. Kling wanted us to think of a fundraiser for J.K. Rowling’s literacy fund, The Children’s High Level Group. Senior English major Francesca Lo Basso suggested we get bands like Harry and the Potters and Draco and the Malfoys to come perform at La Salle.

S: Who is running the show?

EB: I approached Late Night La Salle with the idea for Dr. Kling and they agreed to host it. Francesca and I have been working with Late Night La Salle to plan the event, while I have been working with a woman named Tina (a.k.a. DJ Luna Lovegood) to contact and hire the bands.

S: What bands will be playing?

EB: A Lightning Bolt Scar, Snidget, The Whomping Willows, Draco and the Malfoys and The Remus Lupins.

S: Do students need to be familiar with Harry Potter to attend the show?

EB: Not at all. Although knowledge of the book series and films will make the concert more enjoyable, it will be fun just to come out and hear the music. Some of the bands’ music is comical as well. Draco and the Malfoys have a song on their Myspace called “My Dad is Rich (And Yours is Dead).”

S: Should students expect anything besides music?

EB: We will be raffling off some of the DVDs, and I expect the bands’ sets to be pretty interesting.

S: What do you hope will be the result of this event?

EB: I hope that we can raise some money for The Children’s High Level Group, as well as provide a fun night for everyone.

S: Do you have anything else to add?

EB: Dr. Kling has invited John Granger back to La Salle to discuss his theories on the seventh Harry Potter book. He will be in the St. Neumann lounge at 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 22.
