Student band making a ‘name’ for itself

Wondering if any new bands are playing La Salle this week? On Feb. 10 at 10:30 p.m., No Name Road will be playing in Backstage. The band is made up of five college students, including Kyle Abbott, a junior English and communication major at La Salle. Spotlight! sat down with Abbott to find out more.

Spotlight: Are you the only La Salle student in the band?

Kyle Abbott: Yes. We all go to different schools, so the fact that we can get together to play is wild.

SP: What other schools will be represented?

KA: Temple, Mt. St. Mary’s, Hampton-Sidney and Rowan. There are five guys in the band.

SP: How long have you been performing together?

KA: Two of the guys started playing together our junior year of high school, and then I joined them our senior year. Our drummer just joined recently, so this will be our first show with him. But the band’s been around for about five years.

SP: What do you play?

KA: I’m the bass player.

SP: What genre of music do you guys play?

KA: Oh, that’s a hard question. Our genre is hard to describe because there are so many. One day we’ll be like, “hey, let’s write a blues song,” and then the next we’ll be like, “hey, let’s write this emo ballad.” So our album is a compilation of everything, and we really have no one genre, so I guess it’s fitting that our band name is called No Name Road.

SP: What artists are the band influenced by?

KA: We have many influences, some very unique. We also all have our personal favorite band. Our piano player is really into Something Corporate, our guitarist really likes bands like Wilco and I’m into bands like Incubus.

SP: You said before that you have an album. What’s it called?

KA: It doesn’t have a title yet, it’s actually not released. It’s coming out soon, though. Right now we only have an LP, which is half-recorded. Some of it is studio tracks, some we recorded on a Talkboy.

SP: What do you hope to get out of this concert?

KA: Hopefully just some applause. We just play for the love of music. We’re not in it for money or to change the world. We just want to play.

SP: Do you have anything else you’d like to add?

KA: Come out and see us. I think we’re a little different, and you’ll definitely find at least one song that you’ll like.
