Online courses will be offered this summer

This summer, La Salle will be offering online summer courses that students can take without leaving the comfort of their air conditioned homes.

In a partnership with the College of Professional and Continuing Studies, the School of Arts and Sciences is offering five online courses this summer. These classes include Writers and Their Worlds with Kevin Harty, The Art of Listening with Gary Galvan, Intro to Psychology with David Falcone, Religion in America with Thomas Conway and Principles of Sociology with Carl Hirsch.

According to Joseph Ugras, Dean of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies, the courses have been met with popularity among students, and the religion course has already filled up.

“Students have demonstrated an interest in taking online courses,” Ugras said. “For students who want to take a class while at home in Connecticut or vacationing at the beach, this is a great option.”

To be eligible to take these courses, students must be currently enrolled in the undergraduate day or evening program, and have a minimum 2.25 cumulative grade point average. GPAs will be assessed at the culmination of the Spring 2007 semester to declare eligibility for students wishing to take an online course.

Each student participating in the program may take only one online course this summer. Registration for the online courses is ongoing, and ends May 17.

According to the literature provided by La Salle University regarding the online courses, “the online learning environment requires a disciplined and focused approach and typically involves more time than traditional classes.”

If any student is unsure if he or she is ready or able to take an online course or is interested at all in participating, information and readiness tests are available online.
