Military care package-making supports troops
March 19, 2008 will signify the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War. Whether you are for or against war, it is still occurring and our soldiers are left there with public support slowly dwindling. This strain is placed upon our men and women who have been spending years defending our country. The Easter season is a great time to show support. After all, we want our soldiers to know that we have not forgotten about them. Delta Phi Epsilon, Sigma Lambda Phi, the College Republicans and La Salle’s chapter of ROTC have gotten together and created the idea of sending handmade care packages out to troops stationed in Iraq. Last semester, DPhiE sent out cards to soldiers. One of them was a man who had been stationed in Iraq for a long stint of 18 months. Adrienne Flick, president of DPhiE said,“Many people have such negative images of sororities—we’re changing that,” she said. “We’re involved in community service and the move is helping us get more involved. We’ll be able to work closely with headquarters; many things are in the works.” However, this semester DPhiE is coming together with other on-campus previously mentioned organizations to make this event even larger. Collectively, these organizations found addresses of friends and relatives over in Iraq. At the event, there will be cards and other crafty items to personally decorate. Vice President of Programming for DPhiE Meaghan Walsh, said in reference to this event, “As college students, we can choose to go to college. However, there are thousands of kids our age, who are going to Iraq to do four years of service instead.” Refreshments will be served. The military care packages event will take place in Saint Edward’s and Saint Francis’ lounge at 9:30 p.m. March 19. Bring your friends, “the more the merrier” Walsh said. szrankowskie1@lasalle.edu |
