Sport Shorts: Golf, lacrosse and outdoor track

Golf
Monday and Tuesday, the Explorer golf team participated in the Hofstra Men’s Golf Spring Invitational. The event included teams from Hofstra, Fordham, Fairfield and La Salle.

The two-day event was held at Harbor Links Golf Course in Port Washington, N.Y. Fordham was able to hold off defending champion Hofstra to win the event by three strokes.

The Explorers finished in fourth place overall. Junior John Lorenzo finished the event with a two-day combined score of 161, including a strong first-round 78. This mark was good for the 10th best individual score overall.

The next best finish by an Explorer was freshman Jonathan Glennie, who cut nine strokes off his first-day score on day two to finish tied in 14th overall.

The La Salle golf team will be back in action on Friday at Lafayette College.

Track
On Saturday, April 1, the La Salle track and field team traveled to Widener University for the Danny Curran Invitational. The Explorers made a big impact on the event.

In all, five Explorers won their events. Sophomore Carolyn Lipovsky won the 800-meter run, and senior Elizabeth Geiger took home 1,500-meter run. The 400-meter run was won by senior James Jefferson, and sophomore Joe Fedorowicz won the 800-meter event. Freshman Steven Rendall grabbed the win in the 110-meter hurdles.

The Explorers had 38 top-10 finishers in the competition.

In addition, two Explorer track team members were honored by the A-10 this week for their showings at the Stanford Invitational. Junior Rachel Papin and junior Sean Quigley both received recognition from the conference. Papin was named the Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Performer of the Week, while Quigley received the designation on the men’s side.

Both Papin and Quigley set Explorer records in the 10,000-meter run.

Lacrosse
The Explorer women’s lacrosse team traveled to Hawk Hill on Saturday, April 1 to open up conference play against Saint Joseph’s University.

La Salle scored first but trailed at halftime, 7-5. The score stood at 9-9 in the second half before the Hawks scored four unanswered goals to take the lead for good. Saint Joseph’s won the contest by a final score of 13-10.

Junior Catie Borneman and freshman Nicole Shubert scored two goals each for the Explorers, but in the end it was not enough to stop the Hawks.

With the loss, the Explorers dropped to 4-6 on the season and 0-1 in the Atlantic 10. The Hawks’ record improved to 3-4 on the year.

The Explorer women’s lacrosse team will be back in action twice this weekend. The team will travel to Duquesne on Friday. On Sunday, the team goes to St. Bonaventure for a showdown with the Bonnies.
