Explorer golf closes out fall
Throughout the entire fall season, the Explorer golf team posted solid scores all around and finished well in their five tournaments. They struggled with consistency at times, but did well nonetheless. They started out by placing seventh out of 15 teams in their first tournament, which was the Bucknell Fall Invitational. Then, they finished in 13th place out of 13 teams at the Towson Invitational a few days later. Next, they bounced back and placed seventh in another 13-team field in the Rehoboth Fall Invitational a week later. After tying for eighth place in the Mulekicker Fall Classic, they ended the fall season with the Big 5 tournament. The team brought the fall season to an end with its 15th place finish in the Big 5 Invitational in Flourtown, PA on Oct. 14-15. They got out to a rough start and slipped to 15th place on the first day of the tournament, leaving a substantial margin between themselves and the rest of the field. The top finisher for the first day of the tournament was senior John Lorenzo. Lorenzo shot an impressive 40 on the front nine, followed by a 41 on the back nine, which left him with a total of 81 (+10) for the day. Lorenzo's score of 81 was followed up by junior Chris Caimano's score of 82 (+11) and sophomore Steve Sieracki's 83 (+12). However, on the following day, they would not fare as well. On the second day, the course wasn't as kind to the Explorers as it had been on day one. They failed to climb out of the tournament's bottom spot, and they stayed in 15th overall. The team collectively shot twelve strokes more on the second day than they had on the first. The Explorers’ top scorer for the second day was Sieracki, who posted an 80 (+9) for the day. His score was followed by sophomore Jonathan Glennie's total of 84 (+13) and Lorenzo's score of 87 (+17). This finish was a tough way to end the fall season for the Explorers, a season in which they did rather well. Overall, the team proved that they have the ability to succeed in their spring season. This rather young team gained valuable experience throughout their five tournaments this fall. They played well but will look to improve during the layoff between now and the all-important spring season. Look for the Explorer golf team to do well in their upcoming spring season. prendergastk1@lasalle.edu |
