Volleyball season comes to an end

The volleyball team took a trip this past weekend down Interstate 95 for its final two matches of the 2006 season.

The Explorers had dates with the George Washington Colonials Friday night and the Charlotte 49ers Sunday to finish off the season.

The nation’s capital did not treat the Explorers well, as the Colonials handled La Salle in three games, avenging their loss at the Tom Gola Arena from last year.

The Explorers fell by scores of 30-26, 30-18 and 30-20. Junior Brittany Hanley and sophomore Christa Dominick each had 10 kills to lead the Explorers. Senior Caitlin Conner led the team with 30 assists on just 37 kills for La Salle.

Defensively, senior Carolyn Judge led the way with 21 digs, followed by sophomore Jackie Kushman, who finished with 17 digs. Junior Stephanie Owen led the team with three assisted blocks in the losing effort.

La Salle traveled to Charlotte to play against the 49ers Sunday. Taking on one of the premiere teams in the Atlantic 10 was no small task, but the Explorers gave the 49ers a run for their money. It was also a proud sendoff for their two seniors.

The team fell in three games (30-23, 30-26, 30-25), but they played competitively and led at times. The team was led by sophomore Amy McKeon who had eight kills, followed by junior Erin Sullivan and Dominick, who each had seven.

Judge finished her La Salle career with 14 digs, and Conner had 32 assists. The team finished the season 9-24 overall and without a win in Atlantic 10 play.
