Men's tennis picks up a win

The men’s tennis team inched closer to .500 on Saturday in a 5-2 win over Delaware State. In doing so, the Explorers snapped a three-match losing streak and restored some confidence that had been lacking through the string of losses.

La Salle’s record now stands at 3-4 for the season. For the second time in the last three matches, rain threatened to wipe out the match. After a one-hour delay, however, the match was played. The team was lucky to get the match in, because they were able serve up a win at home.

The Explorers enjoyed singles wins from freshman Matt Rivera (6-4, 6-7, 10-8), junior Eric Glick (6-1, 6-0), sophomore Chris Butera (6-0, 6-1) and freshman Phil Loatman (6-2, 6-0). The doubles point was earned by La Salle in an impressively dominant performance by the pairs of freshman Jonathan Maula and senior Scott Karwowski (8-2) and Glick and Rivera (8-0).

The men started off a little slow but finished off strong with the victory. If the team can get some consistency going up and down the roster, they are likely to become close to unstoppable.

The team will get ready to head on the road, as the Explorers’ next match is at Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday, Oct. 7.
