Field hockey beats Lehigh in overtime
The field hockey team only played one game this week, and it was here at Hank DeVincent Field against the visiting Lehigh Mountainhawks. This game was a defensive struggle. In the first half, La Salle did not even get a shot off. Lehigh did not do much better, tallying only two shots, both by the same player. Lehigh had one corner in the half, and the Explorers had none. In the second half, the Explorer offense picked up somewhat. The team was able to take nine shots in the period, and they drew eight penalty corners. However, this was not enough, as the Explorers failed to score a goal. Lehigh’s offense was less productive than La Salle’s in the second half. The Mountainhawks only took two shots, and neither found the back of the net. The overtime period was much different, though. Three minutes and six seconds into overtime, senior midfielder Amy Comstock was able to beat Lehigh’s Stephanie Palmieri for the game-winner. La Salle junior goalkeeper Ellen Axelsen made four saves en route to the shutout. For Lehigh, Palmieri made six saves on the day, but it was not enough, as Comstock’s overtime goal did all the damage the Explorers needed to get the win. With the win, the Explorers improve to 3-7 on the year, while the Mountainhawks’ loss dropped them to 2-4. The next game for the field hockey team will be on Saturday at 1 p.m., when they will travel to the Main Line for a showdown with the Villanova Wildcats. mcdonaldm2@lasalle.edu |
