Golf team finishes 20th of 24 teams in weather-shortened event

The Explorer golf team was taking part in the Lafayette Invitational this weekend, but Mother Nature decided to pull the plug on the event after just one day of competition.

The forecast looked grim for Sunday, and when the Nor’easter hit the area hard, the remainder of the tournament was cancelled.

In a 24-team field, the Explorers were towards the end of the pack, as they sat in 20th after the first day of competition was completed. Unfortunately for the Explorers, though, the cancellation of the second day prevented them from getting another chance to improve on their 20th place finish.

Although the team did not finish in one of the top spots, they did have some quality performances in the single-round competition, and all five Explorer golfers finished in the top hundred individually.

Senior John Lorenzo was the team’s highest finisher, as his first round 81 put him at nine-over-par. His score was good enough for 45th overall in the total field of 124 golfers.

Sophomore Jonathan Glennie finished his day of golf with a score of 85. This score of 13 over par put Glennie in 86th place overall.

Junior Mike Benzinger and sophomore Steve Sieracki stayed right with one another, as Benzinger finished with an 86 and Sieracki had an 87. These scores put the two players at spots 91 and 92 in the overall field.

Junior Chris Caimano golfed his way to a score of 88, good for 99th place out of the 124 players.

The golf season is winding down, as there are only two more events on the team schedule. First, they will head down to Emmitsburg, Md. for a matchup with Mount St. Mary’s in the Mount Spring Invite. This event is scheduled to take place Saturday and Sunday. The team is then scheduled to participate in the Peacock Invitational on Tuesday.

Hopefully, the weather will be a little more cooperative this week.
