Quigley stars in big weekend for Explorer track team at Atlantic 10 Championships in R.I.

The La Salle track team had a great weekend of competition at the Atlantic 10 Championships. On Saturday afternoon, La Salle traveled to the University of Rhode Island for the championship meet.

The Explorer men had an excellent day. They finished in second place overall, behind only Rhode Island for the Atlantic 10 crown.

Senior Sean Quigley continued his excellent season by winning both the one-mile run and the 3,000-meter run. He was also the anchor in the Explorers’ second-place 4x800-meter relay.

As a result of his constantly outstanding competition throughout the 2006-2007 season, he was named the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. This is the top individual award that the Atlantic 10 gives out.

Quigley was not the only Explorer to have success on Saturday. Senior Billy Rhea finished first in the 500-meter run, and sophomore Korey Edwards won the 800-meter run. Graduate student Ryan Moseley won the long jump competition.

The Explorers’ relay team in the 4x400-meter event grabbed first place as well. That team consisted of junior James Tchabo, Jared Davis, freshman Andrew Maxwell and Billy Rhea.

The Explorer men’s 162 total team points put them 28 points behind Rhode Island.

The women’s team had a strong meet as well, and their team performance was good enough to secure an overall finish of fourth place.

Senior Rachel Papin had yet another great day. She placed first in two events, the 3,000-meter run and the one-mile run.

Senior Danielle Schopf finished in second behind Papin in the 3,000-meter run. Junior Carolyn Lipovsky snagged second place in the 800-meter run, and she finished fifth in the one-mile run.

Junior Adriana Boyle finished fourth in the 800-meter run. Freshman Jennifer Surabian finished third in the 1,000-meter run. Senior Karen Proulx was another Explorer with a good day, as she secured a sixth place finish for La Salle in the 5,000-meter run.

The Explorer women also had a relay team finish in first place, as the 4x800-meter team of Boyle, Papin, Schopf and Lipovsky brought home the win.

The women’s point total of 71 put them behind Charlotte, Richmond and Rhode Island. Charlotte really ran away with the championship, as their 167 points were 57 better than second-place Richmond. La Salle finished 15 points behind Rhode Island for third, and fifth-place Duquesne finished only one point behind the Explorers.

The track team will be back in action again on Thursday, when the squad will travel to New York University for the NYU FastTracks competition.
