Golf team finishes 12th at Fairfield Spring Invitational in Myrtle Beach

The La Salle golf team opened up its spring season this weekend in beautiful Myrtle Beach, S.C., home of the Fairfield Spring Invitational.

The Explorers did not have great success in the two-day event, finishing 12th in the 14-team field. Siena College won the event, and Siena’s total score of 49 over par was 47 strokes better than the Explorers, who finished at 96 over par.

Leading the way for La Salle was senior John Lorenzo. He shot a 78 in the first round, and his total for the event was a 163, 19 strokes over par and 16 strokes off the lead. Siena’s Bryan Bigley had the best individual score, as he finished the tournament at three strokes over par.

The next-best individual finishers for the Explorers were Jonathan Glennie and Mike Benzinger, who finished with scores of 171, good for 51st place overall. Junior Chris Caimano finished in 55th place, and freshman Phil Bruce’s final score of 176 put him in 61st place.

Sophomore Steve Sieracki shot a first-round 81, but he was sidelined for the second day of competition because of a knee injury. Sieracki has some time to get healthy, though, as the team will not be competing again until April 1, when they go up against Monmouth University.

Note: Baseball, softball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and lacrosse all had weather-related postponements and/or cancellations this past week. Rescheduling information and updates can be found at the athletics Web site, www.goexplorers.com.
