Track starts spring season

The Explorer track and field team kicked off its outdoor season last Saturday at the University of Maryland Invitational and the Dan Curran Invitational at Widener University.

Junior Korey Edwards and senior James Tchabo set the spring season in gear with a couple of strong performances.

At Maryland, Edwards was able to capture the 800-meter crown with a time of 1:52.34. Tchabo finished fourth in the 100-meter dash in 11.02 and led the 4x100 relay team to a third-place finish in 43.31.

The other members of the relay team were sophomore James Thomas, George Michael, and junior Steve Rendall. Rendall also snagged second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.60.

Tchabo was also impressive in the 4x400 relay, where he led the squad to another third place finish in 3:18.05.

He was anchored by graduate student William Rhea, sophomore Andrew Maxwell and junior Jared Davis. On the ladies’ side, junior Kim McIntosh secured fifth place in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking in at 15.25.

In the 800-meter event junior Meaghan Hobson ran to a ninth-place finish in 2:19.31. Sophomore Ruth Brown paced the 4x100 relay team to a third-place finish with a time of 49.64. Hobson, McIntosh and sophomore Jalessa Graham completed the squad for the Blue and Gold.

At Widener, sophomore Robert Ricketts led the way with a second-place finish in the 1500-meter with a time of 2:00.21.

Junior Orestes Medina competed in two events for the Explorers. He placed 13th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.20 and seventh in the long jump with a distance of 6.32 meters.

This weekend La Salle will compete in the Stanford Invitational, the Sam Howell Invitational at Princeton, N.J., and the University of Pennsylvania Invitational.

Upcoming meets include the Mount Sac Invitational at Walnut, Calif., the Rider Invitational, and the Penn Relays.
