Yellow Ribbon

What is the Yellow Ribbon Program?
The Yellow Ribbon Program is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. La Salle University has chosen to participate with the VA to assist in funding tuition expenses that exceed the veteran’s benefits. These benefits become available on or after August 1, 2009. No payments can be made under this program for training pursued before this date.

Who is Eligible?
Only individuals entitled to the maximum benefit rate (100% rate of the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill based on service requirements) may receive this funding. Therefore, you may be eligible if:

  • You served an aggregate period of active duty after September 10, 2001, of at least 36 months;
  • You were honorably discharged from active duty for a service connected disability and they served 30 continuous days after September 10, 2001;
  • You are a dependent eligible for Transfer of Entitlement under the Post-9/11 GI Bill based on a veteran’s service under the eligibility criteria listed above.

NOTE: Active duty member and spouse transferee are not eligible for the yellow ribbon program.
* Students receiving the Fry Scholarship are not eligible.

How will I be notified of my eligibility?
When you apply for the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill, you will receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) letting you know if you are eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program. A copy of this Certificate of Eligibility must be brought to La Salle’s Certifying Official in the Office of the University Registrar.. The Certifying Official will certify that the student has been accepted to participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program and is eligible under La Salle’s guidelines and will notify the student that they have been approved. All funds will be paid directly to La Salle University.

How much money will I receive under the Yellow Ribbon Program?
The VA will pay up to $19198.31 in tuition and fees for the academic year
(August 1 to July 31). If the actual net cost exceeds $19198.31, in the academic year, eligible students will receive Yellow Ribbon benefits. La Salle is committed to provide (as of 8/1/2013):

  • Undergraduate students – up to $10,000.00 per student/per year
  • Graduate students – up to $5000.00 per student/per year
  • Doctoral students – up to $5000.00 per student/per year

Through the Yellow Ribbon Program, the VA will match each additional dollar that La Salle contributes toward an eligible student’s tuition costs, up to 50 percent of the difference between the tuition and fees covered by the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the total cost of tuition and fees.
