Profile
A member of the American Psychological Association, the American Counseling Association and several other professional societies, Dr. Rooney has served as an officer in some of them, including President of the Philadelphia Personnel and Guidance Association and President of the Academic Division of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association.  For several years he had been a consultant to a number of religious communities and dioceses, conducting assessment of candidates for the priesthood and religious life.

Dr. Rooney’s background in career counseling has led him to a future-oriented approach that focuses on client’s strengths and potential.  He is interested in the therapeutic relationship and therapeutic communication.  He focuses on understanding and accepting clients’ styles of communicating, and adapting to people and situations, and he aims to work in a “collaborative” approach with them.  He believes in utilizing a client’s internal resources and external sources of support, including medical, spiritual and family resources.

In the 65 years that he has been at La Salle, Dr. Rooney has served as Chair of the Psychology Department, Director of the Master’s Program in Professional Counseling, Chair of the Counseling Center and President of the Faculty Senate. He has published research on the personality of priests and other religious personnel and has collected empirical data needed for additional research. He is interested in the process involved in training competent counselors and therapists and encourages faculty and students to participate in empirical research on this process.
